CURRENT AND FORMER SERVICE MEMBERS ARE KEY TO THIS STUDY'S SUCCESS!

The 2007-08 survey cycle closed on December 31, 2008. If you are a member of the Cohort, or among those invited to participate, the Millennium Cohort Study will contact you at the start of the next cycle in January, 2010. Over 150,000 people are already enrolled in the Millennium Cohort. Participants include Panel 1 (enrolled beginning in 2001), Panel 2 (enrolled beginning in 2004)), and Panel 3 (enrolled beginning in 2007).

Participants are asked to complete one questionnaire (by mail or online) every three years, through 2022. This is necessary to follow developments in health over a long period of time. As participants leave the military, their contributions in responding to questionnaires remain extremely important. As of January, 2009, approximately 20% of Millennium Cohort participants had left military service -- but virtually all remain active members of the Cohort.

Are there risks to participation?

The study team understands the sensitivity of health-related information. They maintain strict confidentiality of all data on participants. Data will not be shared with military commands, disability evaluators, insurance companies, or anyone else. Only summary information from the entire 150,000-member cohort, with no identifying information, will be shared.

What is the benefit of participation?

Participation will ultimately benefit the next generation of military members more than our own. The study team expresses their appreciation to participants with nominal gifts. For example, Millennium Cohort coins, hats, and phone cards are being offered to participants who take the time to complete the questionnaire online.

Study Results

Many of our participants ask about results from this study. As with any long-term project, the greatest value of the Millennium Cohort will not be evident for several years. However, the Millennium Cohort Team has recently published a number of manuscripts in medical journals. Please visit our Millennium Cohort Research page to see what publications and presentations the team has done.
